Chapter 8: Briggs in Alhafra

Right north of the Yampi Desert there's the town of Alhafra. What are you waiting for?

Before Alhafra.

Even though you wouldn't think of it when seeing Alhafra for the first time, also this town is currently struggling with the aftermath of the tidal wave. Still many things are still standing, a good sign. Shortly after you the tour group from Madra will also arrive here. They'll quickly take a look around the town...

A huge town! Alhafra has also suffered.

But the people haven't come as tourists here, because they have a concern. Not only do they want to clear up Piers' question of fault, but also warn the mayor of the pirate Briggs who, if you can remember, has escaped from Madra's prison and is now in search of a boat. They'll ask an older man for the way to the mayor, he'll then guide them for a while and show them the way. In the blink of an eye the Madran group will be gone.

Their reason for coming. The way to the mayor.

But the concerns of the mayor shall be not of interest for you at the moment. The warrior's heart will rather be delighted by the many goods of the shops here, the shops are open here despite the tidal wave. So buy a few pretty pieces before we go on!

At the shops.

Next thing for you to see in Alhafra will be the town's inn. It's located in the very southwest. At the moment half of the town's jammed together here, because the generous mayor... has not much left for the shelterless. In the second floor of the building you'll meet an old acquaintance again – it's Alex, who's sloped off since you've been on Idejima! He's already anticipated you, but is disappointed to have to tell you that there's currently no boat for sale in Alhafra. Therefore he intends to stay here for a while. But rejoining you is not on his mind right now... Thus leave the inn again (and probably spend a night at it before).

Before the inn. Alex has expected you. All boats have been sold...

Now the port of Alhafra's on today's travelling plan. You can find it in the town's northeast, go down through the stairs in the north and then simply procees east. Here you'll then be standing at the quay, head to the ship and go aboard. Here a few men are currently busy freeing the ship's mast from all the rubbish lying around. As they won't be too successful at that, though, they won't really come any further here. Enter the cabin close to the stern right next to you!

To the port! No chance with the mast. A huge boulder...

Go down the stairs in the first room now and in addition save your game... afterwards just follow the next corridor. You'll be eavesdropping a conversation going on right now made by none other than Briggs, the escaped pirate captain! One of his crew members is currently reporting to him that the mayor may soon be aware of his presence here. When the captain's companion's slowly getting a guilty conscience because they initially wanted to steal the ship Briggs won't have too many qualms about all the piracy. After all they're only taking everything away to save the existance of their hometown, Champa...

The mayor could hear about them. A foundamental question! Briggs has no choice!

Briggs continues that they actually never take too much from each town. At the ones with very good opportunities for them they take everything that's not cleared out in a minute, but the bigger and riskier towns on the other hand they avoid as much as possible. That sounds enlightening in the companion's ears... And terrible in the ears of Jenna, who'll thereby loudly reveal you. Briggs and his man will immediately rush towards you, they'll be asked to come with you and then prove Piers' innocence. But as they're no fools either they're not going to do that – what they'll want now is to quickly get rid of you...

What a genius! Jenna breaks the silence. A call to arms!
Briggs and Sea Fighters
Sea FighterBriggs Briggs and Sea Fighter appeared! HP: 1064
Unfortunately the decisive factor in the battle against Briggs won't be tactics, but the stats and levels of your characters for the most part. Briggs and his men have such strong attacks like the Echo Cut or Oil Drops at hand, to make things worse he's even able to call even more of his men into the battle! But luckily he can only do that thrice. It's very recommended to first take out all of his men and then concentrate on Briggs himself as the last man standing. Use your absolutely strongest psynergy available and always target at the center, which should be Briggs. With this strategy you should also simultaneously hit Briggs' companions and thus defeat them. As you can see the battle's favour is simply depending on the strength of your psynergy and how much your characters are able to endure. Don't be ashamed if you'll still have to raise them a few levels! In return you'll be awarded with the victory in one of the game's most difficult battles. Your reward for that with fpur defeated Sea Fighters will be 689 experience points, 1411 coins as well as a Vial.

After the battle Briggs and his crew will squirm before you on the floor, completely exhausted. He for once doesn't know what to do next and leaves himself to your mercy. There appears Chaucha, the pirate captain's wife. She warns you to not judge him rashly, as Briggs did everything solely to help his suffering hometown. The waters before Champa have heated up during the last years, which made the fish in them cease. Briggs thus went out to gather food and save his people at home. Therefore she pleads to you to not give him a too severe punishment. And there already appear the mayors of Alhafra and Madra along with company...

A true man! Briggs had good intentions.

Logically they won't be all too pleased to see that indeed a pirate wanted to take a ship from Alhafra. After the lots of courteous babbling amongst them the gentlemen will be remembered of the actual reason for their arrival here by Kraden. They'll then turn to Briggs and his pirate crew. Briggs will point something out to them: he purchased the ship with money from Madra, which thus makes the ship legal property of Madra. He'll thereupon surrender himself and his group into the hands of the mayor's life guards, but beforehand he'll make a condition: until the ship's reparation his wife shall be allowed to live on the ship. The question about Piers will also be answered.

Clever, clever! Chaucha's allowed to stay here. There they have it.

Briggs' wish will be granted, quite surprisingly. It'll also be decided that Briggs will have to stay in prison at least for the duration of the reparation. Immediately the mayor of Madra will order his men to return to Madra and free Piers there. Then they'll all be about to go back the the mansion of the Alhafran mayor. But before that he'll stop and ask you to come visit him as well, he says he'll have a reward for you. Also the Madran mayor will want to thank you to have passed him this great ship, but he won't be able to give you anything until he'll be back in Madra again. Afterwards he'll leave as well.

They all shall return. A reward! Another reward!

Chaucha is happy to be allowed to stay on the shop, you may visit her some time then... But the group eventually decides to go look for Piers, as he as a Mercury Adept can be of help for them. But before you'll tackle any further adventures walk along the floor in the ship towards its prow. Move a crate here, a hidden chamber's behind it! Inside it use your Tremor close to the crate there so that a large bread atop it falls down! Pick it up, you'll soon need it. Now leave the ship and the docks and thus return to Alhafra.

Let the earth shake. Felix got Large Bread.

Here you'll now come to a little boy near the stairs who's crying because he's starving. Talk to him and hand the large bread you've just found over to him to eat. After he's joyfully eaten everything up he'll be very thankful towards you! He'll advise you to go see his father who's guarding the caves under the mayor's mansion. To find them just run westwards until you come to a few tombstones. Go upstairs here and follow the way northwest. Here you'll find the kid's father. Out of deepest gratitude he'll let you take a look into the caves here – but don't touch anything that belongs to the mayor! Of course...! ;-)

The boy's got new energy! You did good.

So you're now inside the Alhafra Cave. Go deeper into the cave through the stairs that's there directly before you. Also the next room you can run through, don't mind the chests in the eastern part for the time being. In the next area pound the clay pillar into the ground and head towards the rope. Tighten it with Lash so that you're able to climb to the chests. In these three there are 123 coins, a Lucky Medal as well as the precious mail of Ixion. Now come out of the caves again by feet, as unfortunately Retreat won't work here. If you haven't done so before, then now's a good time to spend a night at the inn.

Inside the cave. Ram it into the ground. Felix got the Ixion Mail.

Thinking about it, you can now, as you've already helped to imprison him, visit Briggs in his cell. The prison's located in Alhafra's west, right beneath the graveyard (?!). Here Chaucha's currently her imprisoned husband along with son Eoleo, who seems to possess magical abilities. After some chit-chatting the two will leave again, though. You can then talk to the pirates, but of course you won't be in their best books right now... Alright, this already was it!

I'll be back! Sure, sure.

Still anything left to do in Alhafra? Oh, right, the mayor wanted to talk to you again! His mansion's in the direct proximity of the caves. But there won't be any reward for you... Or at least not until the ship's been repaired. According to him the Madrans should be the ones paying the reparation bill. And afterwards – it shall be part of his trade fleet! The pirates' money he rather intends to spend on the rebuilding of his own town than to use it for the boat. Well, that sure is a way to amortise debts... What the Madrans think of that is clear, I think.

MONEY!!! Let the Madrans pay. That's what it's like.

If you can't stand such blatant incompetence better leave Alhafra now (and even if, do so too). But you won't be given any break now, we'll continue straight away! Return to the Yampi Desert, from the entrance run just run further south then. You'll come to a sign which reads that the Air's Rock lies in the south. This will be your next goal! Jump down the sandfall and pass through the following tunnel.

The Air's Rock lies in the south. A tunnel leading out of the desert!

And back on the World Map again! Follow the path here after the tunnel until you come to a bridge leading westwards. Cross it and keep going in that very direction. In the midst of the desert-like area you'll come to a purply glittering mountain! It's said Air's Rock...

Before Air's Rock

Well then, be prepared to tackle on the first elemental rock on your journey! What secrets it might hold you'll get to know in the next chapter...!
