Chapter 13: Within the Mines

So now you can find yourselves in the mine tunnels underneath Altin! First run along the tunnel here, then you'll come to a passage. But after you've gone through it you'll soon notice that there's no way further here – the high water level blocks the way and has to be lowered first! So now go back and take the passage to the east. Just follow the rails, so to say...! In the next section do the same again, all paths out of the way are dead ends. Next you'll have a giant lake before you again. Keep on going left to see the cause of it. It's another Living Statue that spits all the much water!

The water blocks the way... Follow the rails! The first water beast!

Run along the lake and you'll see a lorry. Of course you can also drive with it! But due to the current constellation of the rails you'd always end up driving in circles. Alter it by flipping a switch not too far away from the lorry! Now jump into the lorry, drive along the rails and eventually you'll get out right in front of the water beast! Fight it like you did against the first statue, after it's fallen the water level will lower accordingly!

Isaac flipped the switch... Lorry ride. The water level gets lower!

Now you have to go back to the mine's entrance. Go by feet or use Isaac's Retreat for that. Now leave the mines. The water's drained away in the town, too! Now you can get to Altin's armour and item shop through a ladder! Here you can buy a few clothes and miscellaneous things for your journey before you go into the mines again. Once you have everything, walk again into the mine tunnel from before!

Before the armour shop. The grocer thanks you!

So now run again along the path in the mine, but this time take the first passage you'll come to again! You'll see that the water that has hindered you from going further before has drained off as well! Thus climb down the ladder and go through the passage. You'll then stand before a few more rails, and to your right is the corresponding lorry! But don't be too hasty now and take it right there – you'd once again drive in a circle. Instead go left along the rails, you'll come to another switch that you have to flip. When you've done that hurry back to the lorry and enjoy the little ride! :-) After a keen jumo over the water you'll reach the entrance to the next area.

The water has flown off! The next switch. Yippieee!!

This one's just a passage, follow it through! There's a chest in a small niche here, by the way... a Mimic! To pass the following area you'll have to create an icy pillar out of a puddle with Frost beforehand. Afterwards you can jump to the path leading you further.

Really a Mimic! Use 'Frost' here!

In the next section you can see the next living statue! Although it's on the other side of the lake, thus you can't reach it yet. Climb down a ladder. You can now see a lorry that'll lead you to the beast! To reach it you'll first have to freeze a nearby puddle with Frost again, though. Climb up, jumo to it and finally take the ride! You won't come to the beast yet, though, but instead to a chest with a 'Dragon Shield'! Give the valuable shield to one of your warriors and take the lorry again to ride back. During the rides you'll surely have noticed the one switch here, which you'll have to flip in order to be able to ride towards the the water beast! It's located in the northeast of the area. As soon as it's flipped you can reach the the third living statue with the lorry! Defeat it and as expected the water in the tunnel will flow off.

Rake the lorry! Isaac got a Dragon Shield. The next statue!

Well, you're finished with this tunnel! Leave it again (Rertreat!) and come back to Altin's surface. Also the last remaining water has drained off here, and now the deepest level of the village along with its weapon shop is finally accessible to you! The assortment's not too cheap here, but maybe you can still afford something here... When you have everything let's get to – the mine section! :-] Due to the water having flown off also the undermost mine tunnel's become walkable again. Well then...!

Weaspons maybe? The last mine section!

For starters follow the rails once again. Eventually you'll then come to a crossways in the mine. You can't go further straight away as a boulder blocks the path, even your Move psynergy is useless here! Drops out then. The path to the left leads to a dead end (albeit the arrow shows in its direction...), so only the way to your right remains! Continue following the rails into the next section. Do the same in it again, you'll explore the rest of this room at a later time. After one smaller passage in the next area you'll now stand before two possible paths: an eastern and a southern one. Both ultimately lead to the same place, as they come together again, but along the southwards path you can also find a chest containing a Lucky Medal! Afterwards run through the long, now reunited path.

Take the western path. Isaac got a Lucky Medal.

Next you'll see a Mercury Djinni sitting before you! You can reach it via a nearby lorry. But before you can do that you'll have to move a stone pillar and create another one by freezing water with Frost. Climb up the ladder and flip the switch. Now jump to the lorry and take it! You'll not immediately ride to the djinni now, but you'll surely do so when you jump in a second time! If this djnni, called 'Spritz', is already your fourth Mercury Djinni your characters will finally be able to learm the Wish psynergy, a curing spells that has an effect on all of your characters! Anyways, now ride back again and follow the rails westwards along the wall. On the way you'll see two puddles, which of course you should alter a little with Frost! Go back, climb up the ladder and jump to the next area.

Move the pillar. Mercury Djinni Spritz here. Go ahead!

And what follows... is another scaringly long mine path. Go through it, nothing special to be found here. The next area should be familiar to you... You've been here earlier already, but you couldn't reach the hill then! Take the path to the north and find your way through all the little rocks on the ground. At the end there's a sign that reads: "Watch for falling rocks! Do not strike the wall! Rocks may fall!" Mmmh... of course! Use your Force on the tree trunk in front of you. And the rockfall won't stay out – an enormous boulder will crash down and roll in your very direction... RUN!! :-)

Don't strike the wall! Force. RUN!!

The giant boulder will crash on the ground and bring a passage to surface! But a roar coming from the hole surely won't mean anything good... jump down through the notch and use the rails as a ladder to climb down the hole! You'll now find yourself in a kind of underground chamber. Save your game and follow it to its end, where another nice statue would like to have a date with you... thing is only, this time it'll be a little bigger – and tougher!

A hole in the ground... The Hydros Statue.
Hydros Statue
Hydros Statue Hydros Statue appeared! HP: 1300
The Hydros Statue's basically a much tougher version of its smaller counterparts, the Living Statues! It'll predominantly attack you with its water psynergy, which can really hurt indeed! Although it doesn't have any attack that can alter your status. The battle will most likely proceed like the one against the Killer Ape – use your strongest psynergy, which by this point should already hurt qzite a lot, such as Ragnarok, Heat Wave or Storm Ray. As the statues weak against fire the Ruffian class may be ideal for Isaac and Garet, as it contains the Planet Diver psynergy. In addition to this, Ivan can use his Sleep psynergy to make this beast completely harmless! :-) Mia's water psynergy as a means of attacking has no place in this battle, she's just going to serve as the healer again. If you've found all four Mercury djinn up to this point already, there actually won't be anything to worry about – her Wish psynergy heals faster than the monster's able to damage in any case! Whatever, the fight shouldn't last too long... You receive 496 experience points, 2400 coins as well as a Lucky Medal.

After the battle Garet will full of joy cheer that now the most likely last water beast has been defeated! Still there's a general wonderment from where the statues came and what's the reason for this underground chamber. But in no time the defeated Hydros Statue will 'melt' and reveal a chest! Examine its content and you'll hold a Lifting Gem in your hands! It can teach you the Lift psynergy, with which you can levitate objects! Use Retreat now, it'll bring you back to the start of the mine.

We've the defeated the last water beast! A treasure chest! Isaac got the Lifting Gem.

Time to see the new ability in action! Actually you'd have to go now into the mine you were just in again, but for the sake of completeness you can get a Cookie before that... tasty! (Although we say 'biscuit' in England. :-]) To get it go into the room at the very end of the uppermost mine, where you've also fought the first living statue in this chapter. Here keep going right, climb down a ladder and go to the next room. Stand in front of the boulder and use Lift. The stone will float up and you can take a look into the chest!

Way to the cookie's here! Isaac got a Cookie.

The actual path you have to take if you want to progress is in the undermost mine again. Run along the path until you come to the immovable boulder behind the sign again. With your Lift psynergy you can levitate it, so it won't be hindering you anymore! Now the path is free, proceed. You'll then stand before three possible paths you can take, the right one's a dead end, the left one leads to a pillar which you can move. You'll open up a chamber thereby in which there is a chest with a Vial in it. The central path leads you to another boulder, but taht one won't be a problem at all thanks to your Lift. Follow the path.

Use 'Lift' here! Isaac got a Vial. Nearly through!

We're through!! Never ever these bloody tunnels again! That's because you've just reached the exit of the mines!
