Chapter 5: In Kolima and the Forests

So then, pack your bags as we'll now find out more about the curse that has befallen Kolima! That village lies far east of Bilibin, so once you're on the World Map again go southeastwards along a narrow stripe of land until you reach a wooden wall – the Bilibin Barricades, you've just talked about them with McCoy! He didn't want to give you the keys for them, and you'll see at the door of the barricades that it's locked. But what's that big wooden box to your left? With Move you'll see you can move it, do that and make room for you through the barricades! You'll soon come to three trees standing on top of each other... they're also cursed people, but for now you can't help them. Go on and leave the barricades.

Keep going eastwards west on the World Map and pass a bridge. To Kolima it's further eastwards, but first run west here, along a tongue of land. At its very end there's a forest. Explore it (with "A") and you'll find the Turtle Boots! You shouldn't really equip them due to their slow-down effect, but they still deserved the mention for the sake of completeness! Run back and then to Kolima in the east.

Finally in the village the first thing you'll notice are the enchanted villagers... and Ivan confirms this by reading the cries for help in the mind of one of them. Soon Garet will notice the shiny spots on the ground... And immediately the same power that has cursed the villagers will befall you and drag you down! The curse tries to stick to you through a glittering rain, but out of nowhere a force field will appear around you then and save you. After the rain has stopped the three heroes will talk about the strange event. Ivan thinks it might be psynergy. Completely surprised about that Garet will soon notice you're able to move again. Everything seems to be fine again. Or not...?

The glamour rain will start anew, but now you're prepared! Once again a shield will appear* that protects you from being enchanted. Baffled about your power the creator of the curse, a tree called Tret will speak to you. Laurel, another tree from the forests of Kolima, will tell you that Tret was once gentle. But when the people from Kolima began to destroy the forest his wrath got the upper hand and he cast a spell on the village. For your quest he'll also say that you have to go into the forest and there reawake his good half if you want to save Kolima! Thereupon the spell will stop and you come together again.

* The transparency effect of the shields is achieved by showing alternating pictures of blue shields and nothing again in rapid succession. So don't be too much surprised about the following screenshots.

As all the villagers are enchanted there's not much left to discover in Kolima! But a few things you still shouldn't miss! First there's an apple hidden in a pot in the northeast, then – even more important! – there's another Venus Djinni here, Granite. It's awaiting its rescue in an enclosure in the southeast of the village. To get there just use the back entrance of the "tree house" next to the enclosure – in other words, don't go inside it through the frontside, but from behind. Climb down a ladder in the tree then, go through a tunnel, climb up again and you should stand right next to the Djinni. It'll be a pleasure for it to join you. Afterwards go all the way back, it's time to leave Kolima!

From Kolima it's just a little walk northwestwards to reach the Kolima Forest, in which you'll also find Tret! In the first section of the forest go straight ahead, but don't cross the river over the small wooden bridge. Instead continue your way in northeasten direction. Thereby roll a tree trunk into the water so that you can proceed. Then cross another wooden bridge and keep going west. Here you have to roll away a tree trunk, too, but this shouldn't be a problem for you. In the very west you should come to the next area.

The following part of the forest isn't much different. Run westwards until you reach two tree trunks. Move the lower one then to proceed and worm your way through the way that follows. At the end go eastwards again and enter anew the following area. In this one you'll now see a true moving puzzle, but even that won't be a problem! Run to the trunk lying vertically and roll it (it'll come to a halt because of another one). Zigzag around the tree stumps and you're on the other side of the trunk. Now roll it back again! Then roll the upper, horizontally lying trunk upwards. To get behind the first trunk again you have to roll the other horizontal one downwards. Now the path should be clear and the vertical tree trunk can be rolled into the water! Jump to the other side of the river, go up the stairs and finally just follow the way which by now should lead you eastwards.

The next puzzle... and quite a wet one at that! A pool of water will initially block your way. Walk a little further and you'll see a floodgate with a switch next to it. Pull it to drain the water way! This way you can now go downstairs and roll the tree trunks into more useful positions. To reach the next area you'll simply have to roll the most northwestern and vertically lying trunk away! Then go back and pull the switch of the floodgate, so that the water level rises again and lifts the trunks. Now you can walk and hop over the now-swimming trunks! In addition you can get a Fur Coat from a chest in the northeast here if you position the trunks a little differently. The the screenshot below for orientation there. A picture is worth a thousand words.

I personally recommend getting the Fur Coat, it's a great artefact. Anyway – you're now in the least section of the forest, here you'll find Tret and Laurel, who have talked to you in Kolima! At first speak with Laurel before you – sadly he's already given up hope for Tret and the forest, he asks you to leave the forest... but, there's still hope! Right next to Laurel you'll find Tret. His good side, the one you're seeing right now, won't talk to you – instead of that his inner evil persona will inform you that now it has control over the forest. Thus you'll have to fight the root of the evil that lies within Tret himself! Climb up the vine and enter the inner part of the tree.

One must admit, from outside it didn't look nearly as roomy as it does now! :-) The only way for now here is another vine in the hinder part of the room, find your way through the narrow paths and climb it up. Next thing you'll notice is that there's a massive pit in the middle with many spider webs and leafs. Onto the latter ones you can jump, but they can always only take one hop! After the second hop you'll fall through them. Go to the bottom part of the room (ignore the path to the left, it's a dead end) and jump over the last leafs to the other side. Go through the eastern exit. You're now standing on one of Tret's branches. Go a little further and you'll find a vine. Climb it up and on the new branch go back to Tret's inner part.

Back into the tree again you now have the opportunity to get a few things. First is a Psy Crystal in the very north, take it if your psynergy's already about to run out. Furthermore there's a Healing Ring in a chest to which you can jump! Both just have the downside that you'll fall down after jumping onto a leaft a second time. As soon as you have everything jump to the northernmost vine and climb it up. As the southern exit of the room's a dead end!

Take the southern exit to the next section of the tree and by that come onto a branch again. Climb up the vine at the end and walk towards the tree again. But before you enter why not go to the last branch here? As at its end a Jupiter Djinni awaits you...! The djinni called Breeze is quite a sturdy one, but you'll surely be victorious! :-) Once you have it go into the tree again. Directly in front of you there's a chest. Open it and you'll find a nut inside it! Now you have to go back to the floor below it. Go all the way back by your feet or jump onto an already crumbly leaf and fall down.

From here on take the way to the west and go outside. On the branch climb up a vine again and go back to Tret's inner part. You're now on the side opposite to the one from earlier, from here on you have to fall down exactly at the central leaf to finally get to Tret's evil side! The starting point is the southwesternmost leaf, jump onto it. Now one to the right, then up and lastly jump to the right again. Halt! Now jump back to the left! You'll land on the central, already crumbly leaf and fall through it – down the whole tree! =)

But as you have strong knees the fall won't hurt you at all. You're in the heart of Tret... Now find your way to him, well, you can't exactly miss him here. He'll curse you and your power, and in the blink of an eye the fight against him will start!

Tret
Tret Tret appeared! HP: 710
Now Tret's already a little harder to defeat than the bandits! He's not going to attack you with rather strong psynergy too seldomly, which is why I recommend to have all djinn as set! Let Isaac attack, but Garet and Ivan use their strongest psynergy (such as Spire, Plasma or Volcano). This should really make things warm for him! Especially keep an eye on Ivan's HP and try to not let him get defeated – above all he's both a strong magician and a quick healer! If one your characters should fall asleep due to Tret's 'Sleep Star', just keep cool. Continue to attack and only heal when necessary. Your efforts will be rewarded with 226 experience points, 700 coins as well as a Potion.

Once the battle's over a vine will appear in the center and the good Tret slowly come back to his senses. He's very weak, but still manages to thank you for defeating his evil side. But just when he's about to rest in peace Garet and Ivan interrupt him – Tret has to stay alive and transform the people of Kolima back to human beings! Shocked about the sudden memory of his evil deed Tret tries to let this happen with his magic. But it's a futile attempt! Tret's too weak, he can't save Kolima anymore and withers...

But is Tret really lost? Laurel still has a n advice which might be really useful for you! But for that you first have to get out of the inner Tret. Exit the tree via the vine that's popped up or use Isaac's Retreat! Now go to his tree friend and read his mind.

The waters of Mercury Lighthouse? Good thing you'll have to visit it on your journey anyway! Leave the forest, yet again the quickest way to do that is to use Retreat. So, now let's go to Imil and the Mercury Lighthouse!
